Pushing boundaries. The phrase takes on new meaning as we watch human beings risking their lives to escape across borders, as we read of arms being opened and, sadly, walls being built in reaction to exodus. We wonder whether the limits we set ourselves--across states, for ourselves, for others--might be slightly more arbitrary than we had once assumed.
Boundaries must be tested, questioned, pushed and pulled before their existence can be justified. The pages of Vol. 3, Issue 1 of Agave Magazine pulse with thoughtful challenges to the status quo that remind us of the power of art to help us create a better world.
Vol. 3, Issue 1 can be read online for free; print copies are also available in the Agave Magazine & Press shop.

There are times when words are not enough.
The hundreds of thousands of refugees who risk life and limb to find security abroad have made ambivalence impossible. There is no denying the responsibility we all shoulder.
Tired of "tweeting my despair about the current refugee crisis that the UK government is responding to with inhumane feebleness", YA author Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls, The Chaos Walking trilogy) set up a fundraising page with the goal of collecting £20,000 for Save the Children.
Three days and nearly half a million pounds later, it would seem he has hit a nerve.
The fundraising page is peppered with authors pledging £10,000, including Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials trilogy), Cressida Cowell (How to Train Your Dragon), Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider), Jill Mansell (Rumour Has It), Marian Keyes (This Charming Man), Francesca Simon (Horrid Henry), John Green (The Fault in Our Stars), Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant), Jojo Moyes (Me Before You) and Mr. Ness himself.
You can join their ranks by pledging a donation on Mr. Ness's page. You can also, depending on your location:
And once you're done, treat yourself to a good read from one of the authors above.
